Theatres

Name:
Location:

It is no accident that Riga’s theatrical troupes often leave the capital city and offer their art elsewhere, both in Latvia and beyond its borders. That is particularly true of the New Riga Theatre, which offers everything from contemporary versions of the classics to the avant-garde. Latvians love and respect their National Theatre, which is housed in the building where the country’s independence was proclaimed in 1918. Also highly respected is the Daile Theatre, as well as the Russian Drama Theatre where performances, naturally, are staged mostly in Russian. Fun-lovers will enjoy evenings of improvisational comedy at the “Hamlets” actors’ club. In the weeks before the Summer Solstice, vast numbers of people go to see a legendary play about the season, “Tailor Days in Silmači.” New York has Broadway and off-Broadway performances, and similarly, Riga has its “major” theatres and a significant number of independent or amateur troupes. Every viewer will find something to enjoy. During the summer, when Latvia’s theatres are on holiday, guest performances and other events are presented on their stages. Some theatres may offer synchronized translation for certain performances. Ask at the box office.
